Matcha at Home: Why I Still Whisk Mine in a Bowl

Handmade stoneware matcha bowl in Bark with a bamboo whisk

I got into matcha very early, around 15 years ago, when it wasn't really a thing yet. We were setting up our first café at the time, and I fell for it straight away.

It's still one of my favourite parts of the day. I love the whisking, the foaming, the energy it gives you, and trying it with different milks. It's such an aesthetic thing to make, and I love every part of it. And there's no noisy machine. Just you, a bowl and a whisk.

How I make mine

It's very simple:

  1. Whisk the matcha powder by itself in the bowl, dry.
  2. Add a little hot water.
  3. Whisk to a smooth (not thick) paste.
  4. Add some more hot water.
  5. Whisk until it foams.
  6. Add some warm milk.

That's it. Everything you need is a handmade bamboo whisk, a bowl and some good matcha powder.

Why it has to be a bowl

A matcha bowl gives you proper space for whisking. Making it in a mug just feels weird. You also want to be able to hold the bowl in your hands and swirl it, keeping the matcha moving as you drink.

Our handmade stoneware matcha bowls are made for exactly that, and each one comes in its own glaze and as they're hand made, your fingers sit in the grooves made by another persons.

My colour

For matcha, I like calmer colours. The browns are more my thing, like Bark and Auburn. Funnily enough, my coffee is always in a brightly coloured mug. I don't know why, it's just always been my thing that way. Matcha is the calm part of the day; coffee is the loud part.

A gift for anyone, even if they've never tried matcha

A matcha bowl and whisk make a lovely Christmas present, even for someone who has never tried matcha before. And if it turns out they don't like matcha, the bowl is the perfect size for soup or stew too. It's a gift that won't end up at the back of a cupboard.
